Beyond Vision

Irish Fest

Good morning Milwaukee colleagues,

We received the below message from Cheryl Orgas, Executive Director of ABLE, about an exciting collaboration with the upcoming Irish Fest (August 20-22). Exciting!

Lani

Dear friends of ABLE,

Milwaukee Irish Fest is collaborating with ABLE to offer the 2021 schedule and pertinent information in numerous formats.

Please share this information with as many individuals as you can reach, so our community has full access to this information for the Milwaukee Irish Fest. Here are the three options for Irish Fest info and daily schedules:

Audio recordings of Irish Fest information and daily schedules can be found at this link: https://www.ablenow.org/news-events/2021-milwaukee-irish-fest/

You can also go to the Irish Fest website, https://irishfest.com/map.htm for the audio recordings of schedules and information.

A braille copy will be at each of the 3 gates for you to look at in preparing for your time at Irish Fest.

Please email kduerr@ablenow.org or Milwaukee Irish Fest at info@irishfest.com with feedback. We would like to know what options end up being the most helpful and/or least helpful.

Cheryl Orgas, Executive Director

Fáilte ar ais! (Welcome back!)

The spirit of Irish America is calling. After two long years, we’re back. So is the celebration. You’ll find endless cultural activities—Celtic rock, Irish dancing, authentic food, friends and family—at the world’s largest Irish music festival, right here in Milwaukee. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Milwaukee Irish Fest returns to the Henry Maier Festival Park for three days—with over 75 entertainment acts, all-day activities and more. Come one, come all. Just come ready to smile.

The Legend of Danny The Dobhar-chú (pronounced: do-war coo)

To understand what a Dobhar-chú is (pronounced do-war coo, the “b” is silent), you first need to understand what a cryptid is. Quite simply, it’s any animal whose existence is unsubstantiated. Nessie in Scotland, the Hodag here in Wisconsin and Bigfoot are all cryptids. You’ll find them in any culture with a rich history rooted in storytelling—and there are no greater storytellers than the Irish.

The Dobhar-chú—also known as a King Otter—is a cryptid that first showed up in Ireland (Conwall cemetery in Glenade, County Leitrim, to be precise) during the 17th Century. Carved into a headstone, historians have uncovered a relief featuring an animal with the body and legs of a dog, but the head and tail of an otter. Dobharchús are thought to live in the water and be about 10-15 feet in length with dark fur and black-tipped ears. Our Dobhar-chú (we’ve named him Danny) is believed to have swum the length of the North Atlantic Ocean; across the Gulf of St. Lawrence; through the St. Lawrence River; across Lakes Ontario, Erie and Huron; then down Lake Michigan before arriving in our harbor. He’s been spotted paddling around Lakeshore State Park, occasionally sunning himself on the rocks, and taking in the sights and sounds of our festival at dawn and dusk. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of him. And fortunately, in addition to being great storytellers, we Irish are thought to be lucky as well.
