Accessibility FAQs

Laying the Groundwork…

What does 508 Compliance mean?
When the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was amended in 1998, section 508 required all Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to people with disabilities. This includes websites and documents.

What does WCAG mean?
The United States isn’t the only country that wants to improve the Internet to include all people. WCAG 2.0 is a standard that rates the accessibility of websites worldwide. Inclusion knows no borders!

What is Accessibility?
The dictionary tells us that accessibility is a noun, “the quality of being able to be reached or entered”. Much work has been done through the ADA to get all people access to more buildings. Now the focus is on making the Web a place where everyone can have access.

Do other websites need to be Compliant?
In the past, several years, many large companies were identified as not having accessible websites and were sued in Federal court. These include Target, the NBA, even Toys “R” Us. The problem that is consistent in each case is that people with a disability were unable to use the site for the intended purpose. Compliance can get your organization ahead of the curve and avoid being made aware after it is too late.

How do I make sure my website is Compliant?
This is the fun part. You can work with us at Beyond Vision! We have the tools to provide you with a combined service of automated and manual review of your website with full reporting, processes and remediation documents. All of this is done by a team of people who are legally or fully blind. You can support accessibility and help fight the 70% unemployment rate among people who are blind.
